Delta Air Lines, Inc. Principal Solution Architect - IT Systems and Platforms in Atlanta, Georgia

The Systems & Platforms Architect will be responsible for creating, maintaining & communicating the IT systems architecture & strategy, in alignment with business needs and strategic direction, across compute, storage, network, virtualization and cloud-enabled domains.

This position creates and maintains the detailed descriptions and interrelationships of the essential components of IT services in the systems & platforms domain. This role sets current state and future direction of the technological landscape, taking into account the overall IT service strategy, and is responsible for standardizing/optimizing technology and identifying emerging technologies for the enterprise. This position reports to the Managing Director of Platform, Hosting, Middleware and Database Services within the Infrastructure & Reliability organization, and will work in close collaboration with senior leadership in the infrastructure domain.


-Serve as an expert for the Systems & Platform Architecture domain and maintain a broad understanding of the other Architecture domains (e.g. Business, Application, Data, and Security domains)

-Determine standards related to Systems & Platforms Architecture concepts and technologies

-Optimize delivery of technology solutions via a deep understanding of the technical architecture and infrastructure technologies in the systems and platforms domain

-Define strategies and systems & platform architectures for enterprise scale technologies to meet business needs in resilient, secure, flexible and agile manners

-Ability to design and produce an enterprise "City Plan" that is representative of Delta's systems & platforms architecture strategy, working with peer infrastructure architects

-Design and maintain consistent enterprise-wide systems & platforms architecture standards and associated 3-5 year technology roadmaps for key technologies

-Provide strategic leadership in identifying new concepts, ideas, techniques, and technology assistance (best practices, guidelines and design patterns for supported technologies)

-Engage IT leadership, both technical and managerial, for review and acceptance of architecture and standards

-Work with Architecture peers to develop, maintain, and execute processes for enforcement of technology standards, policies, and procedures across IT, external vendors and outsourced service providers

-Design and maintain standard templates, reference architectures, and design patterns that assist solution architects to develop solutions to business unit requirements that use/re-use common technology platforms

-Serve as a senior technology advisor to major projects and programs

-Monitor & measure the execution plan against the strategy & KPIs; identify and track gaps & opportunities. Review and adjust the strategy for continuous improvement and innovation

-Provide technical direction and leadership to resolve critical design or operational issues that affect development and deployment of new products and services in the enterprise

-Research, analyze, determine capabilities and propose technology solutions that address specific business needs and product/service strategies across lines of business.


-Candidate must have 10+ years of hands-on experience in relevant technology areas including strategy and implementation

-Must have expert level competency in systems & platforms architecture and demonstrated expertise in two or more additional technology areas, including technologies such as

o Cisco UCS Compute

o MDS Storage fabrics

o Pure Storage, EMC and NetApp storage solutions

o Nexus Switching and ACI and/or NSX network overlays

o VCE VScale environment

o F5 Loadbalancers (physical & virtual)

o Infobox DNS/IP Mgmt appliances (physical & virtual)

o Palo Alto NextGen firewalls (physical & virtual)

-Working knowledge of technology offerings and industry best practices for a broad set of infrastructure systems architectures

-Proven record of accomplishments in major enterprise level projects

-Strong planning experience, especially the design of longer term strategies

-Experience defining requirements for evolving enterprise infrastructures to support future needs

-Strong communication and documentation skills

-Experience presenting to industry peers

-Experience in infrastructure architecture and design of complex distributed systems environments

-Demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges

-Willingness to travel as needed

-Possess ability to share and communicate ideas both verbally and in writing to colleagues at multiple levels within the organization in a clear and concise manner, appropriate to each audience

-Broad system-level expertise across multiple computing platforms and technologies is required, along with the ability to influence technical direction at the department level and across multiple IT projects or technology areas

-Previous experience as a successful systems & platforms architect highly desirable

-Experience in providing systems & platforms architecture direction and leading a team of engineers through large scale and/or enterprise-wide initiatives

-Must have experience in multiple technologies and architectures

-Experience in cloud native architectures and micro-service design

-Experience designing processes via automated pipelines using common scripting languages

-Experience designing automation pipelines by using continuous delivery tools


-The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated experience in several of the following: enterprise architecture, Delta's technology and application strategies, project management, application development, hardware/software deployment, business requirements analysis, test systems management, or technical support
